Open a document on your hard disk or a network
1. Click
Open
2. If
you want to open a document that was saved in a different folder, locate and
open the folder.
3. Double-click
the document you want to open.

Open a document as a copy
1. Click
Open
2. If
you want to open a document that was saved in a different folder, locate and
open the folder.
3. Click
the document you want to open a copy of.
4. If
you can't find the document in the folder list, you can search for it.
5. Click
the arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open as Copy.
Note:
- When you open a document as a copy, a new copy of the document is created in
the folder that contains the original document.

Open an earlier version of a document
1. On
the File menu, click Versions.
2. Click
the version of the document you want to open.
3. Click
Open.
This version contains all the previously saved versions.

Open a document as read-only
1. Click
Open
2. If
you want to open a document that was saved in a different folder, locate and
open the folder.
3. Click
the document you want to open as read-only.
5. If
you can't find the document in the folder list, you can search for it.
6. Click
the arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open Read-Only.

Open a document created in another program
1. Click
Open.
2. Click
the file format you want in the Files of type box. You can also type the
extension in the File name
box

you want to open a document that was saved in a different folder, locate and
open the folder.

the document you want to open in Word. If you can't find the document in the
folder list, you can search for it.

Open a document on a network by using a UNC address
1. Click
Open on the Standard toolbar.
2. In
the File name box, type the UNC address for the network share that has
the document you want, and
then press ENTER. For example, type \\Computer1\Files
to open a document on a server named Computer1 and a share named Files.
3. In
the folder list, double-click folders until you open the folder that contains
the document you want to open.
4. Double-click
the document you want to open.
Tip:
- To open a document
on a network share that you have recently opened by using a UNC address, click
the UNC connection in the File name box.

Open a document to view in your browser
To
view a document in your browser, the documents must be saved in a Web page
format such as
.htm, .html,
.htx, or .asp
1. Click
Open
2. If
you want to open a document that was saved in a different folder, locate and
open the folder.
3. Click
the document you want to view in your browser.
4. If
you can't find the document in the folder list, you can search for it.
5. Click
the arrow next to the Open button, and then click Open in Browser.

Open a document at an FTP site
Before
you can open a document at an FTP site, you must add the FTP site to the list
of Internet sites.
1.
Click
Open on the Standard toolbar.
2.
In
the Look in box, click FTP Locations.
3. In
the list of FTP sites, double-click the site you want, and then double-click
the location at the site that contains the document you want to open.

Double-click
the document you want to open.
Tip:
- To quickly open an FTP site or a document at an FTP site,
type the FTP address in the File name box, and then press ENTER.
For example, type ftp://ftp.samples.microsoft.com/ to open the Microsoft
FTP site. If the FTP Logon dialog box appears (if this is the
first time you've opened this FTP site during this session of Microsoft Word),
you can click Anonymous to log on to an FTP site that allows anonymous
log on. If you want to log on to an FTP site that you have user privileges for,
click User, and then type your password.
Use
Word to open a Web page on a Web server
1. Click
Open on the Standard toolbar.
2. On
the Places Bar, click Web Folders, and then double-click the
folder on the Web that contains the Web
page you want to open.
3. In
the folder list, locate and open the folder that contains the Web page.
4. Double-click
the Web page you want to open.
