5.15.3 Creating a Hyperlink to a Word Document

Hyperlink is a mechanism by which you can jump to a location in the current document or Web page or to a different Microsoft Word document or a Web page or to a file that war created in a different program. You can even use hyperlinks to jump to multimedia files such as sounds and videos. In the exercise below you will create a hyperlink that jumps from a Microsoft Word file to a chart in Microsoft Excel that provides more details. A hyperlink is represented by a “hot” image or display text – which is often blue and underlined – that the reader clicks to jump to a different location.

  1. In the new Microsoft Word document, type – Click Payroll worksheet to see the details of the payroll master.

  1. Select the text – Payroll Worksheet.

  1. Save the Microsoft Word document by the name TRIAL.

  1. Click on the Hyperlink button.
Hyperlink dialog box becomes on screen.

  1. Click on the Browse button.
Link to File dialog box is now open.

  1. Select Payroll and click on OK.
You will be back onto the Link to File dialog box with the path and the filename of PAYROLL.xls.

  1. Click on the OK button.
You will be back to the document and you will see that the words Payroll Worksheet will be blue and underlined.
As you move the pointer over the text, the pointer shape changes to that of hand and you can click over it. As you click, immediately you move onto the Payroll worksheet.

  1. Click on the Back key button. It will take you back to the Microsoft Word document having the hyperlink. Observe that the link is now of a different colour.

  1. Close the Microsoft Word document.
