3.4 Miscellaneous Windows Features


3.4.1 The My Computer Icon

Lets you access the parts of your computer where the files and programs are stored. When you double click on it, you can see the 3 1/2 Floppy (A:), Hard Drive (C:), CD ROM (D:), Printer folder, Dial Up Networking folder and the Control Panels folder.

1.       Hard Disk: Scandisk, defrag, and backup utilities are just a right click away.

2.       Floppy Disk: Drag and drop files on here to quickly copy to a floppy, or right click to format.

3.       CD-ROM: Opens by default every time you slip in a new CD.

4.       Control Panel: Contains all of the controls for making changes to the computer.

5.       Printers: You may change the properties of the printer here, such as internal memory and network settings.

6.        Dial-Up Networking: Set up a modem to access the Internet.

 


3.4.2 Network Neighborhood

In Windows Network Neighborhood is located on the desktop. Network Neighborhood  provides a view of all the shared computers, files and folders, printers, and other resources on the network to which your computer is connected.

Use this folder to locate shared resources on the entire network to which your computer is connected. Shortcuts to the computers, Web servers, and FTP servers where you've accessed documents or programs are automatically created in My Network Places. You can also create shortcuts to network, Web, and FTP servers by using the Add Network Place wizard.

If your computer is a member of a workgroup, you can double-click Computers Near Me to narrow your search to computers that are in the same workgroup. For more information about FTP, double-click Internet Explorer on your desktop, click Help, and then click Contents and Index. Search for FTP.

You can open My Network Places by double-clicking My Network Places on the desktop.
